It bothers me when someone uses another person’s name and reputation to advance their own position, without the other’s consent or agreement. It’s an act of reverse plagiarism: attributing an opinion to someone else that they didn’t hold. The practice is especially galling when presenting a deceased man’s opinion as the opposite of his actual words.
